Maitland FL Real Estate

A City With a Past

Maitland is a city known for its remembrance of things past. Turn a corner in this town and you’ll be pleasantly surprised by a building or an entire street that’s steeped in the nostalgic charm of a bygone age. The past is still very much part of the present in the city and if you’re lucky you might even have the chance to have your own piece of historic Maitland, FL real estate.

Incorporated in 1885 as the Town of Lake Maitland, the area where the city now lies once had a more unusual name. The Seminole Indians, the region’s original inhabitants, called it Fumecheliga (Musk Mellon Place). The city’s present-day name, however, derives from Fort Maitland, a U.S. Army fort which was established in the area in 1838.

One of Central Florida’s oldest incorporated municipalities, Maitland’s history goes back for more than a hundred years. After Fort Maitland was decommissioned and demolished in the mid-1800s, the area’s bountiful natural resources started drawing settlers who cleared forests and planted orange trees. The first property deed for Maitland, FL real estate was issued in 1873 and soon after that, fragrant citrus groves, residential neighborhoods, hotels, a downtown and a railroad were established.

Today, the city and its concerned residents continue to work hard to preserve the buildings and structures of Maitland’s prosperous orange-growing days. A historical corridor stretches out from the city center to the Lake Lily-Lake Catherine area, a site which includes many gracious residences, a number of which still serve their original purpose.
